Explore the Chandranath Hill and Temple of Sitakunda
Sitakunda is an Upazila of Chittagong/Chattogram District of Bangladesh. This place has an urban settlement which is the Sitakunda Town. It is one of the 15 Upazilas (administrative unit) of Chittagong/Chattogram District.
Sitakunda is one of the oldest human settlements in Bangladesh. History says it was alternately ruled by Buddhist rulers from Myanmar in the east and Muslim rulers from Bengal in the west. The Buddhist Pala Empire of India ruled Sitakunda for a short period in the 8th century.
The Dhaka-Chittagong Highway and the railway are significant drivers of economic development in Sitakunda. Sitakunda is primarily an agricultural area, but it also has its largest ship breaking industry.
If you want to plan a day trip to Sitakunda, you shall start your journey from Chattogram’s Dampara Bus Stand at around 6 am. The distance is about one and half hours to 2 hours from the bus stand, so by 7:30/8 am, you shall reach Sitakunda.
Once you reach Sitakunda, get freshened up at a local restaurant where you can have your breakfast as well. After you finish your breakfast, you can head towards to peak of Chandranath Hill. To reach there, you need to hire a ride, preferably a CNG which will take you to the peak of the Hill, 1530 feet above.
To reach the top of the hill you can either take the long stairs or go by the regular trekking road. The Chandranath Temple, located on top of Chandranath Hill, is a well-known Shakti Peeth near Sitakunda in Bangladesh, where, according to Hindu sacred texts, Goddess Sati's right arm fell. Hindus visit Chandranath Temple as a pilgrimage site. It stands approximately 1,020 feet above sea level.
You will indeed have a fantastic experience as you climb higher. You will at a point notice something white from the top, that is, the sea. This experience will get stitched in your heart for a very long time. Make sure to carry lots of water and refreshing drinks, which will help you climb the long hilly route.
Once you reach the peak, the picturesque view will take all your fatigue away. Now it’s time you visit the historical temple. Many people visit this historical temple with different believes, and others visit to experience the beauty and experience and gather more knowledge about this historical monument. You can take plenty of pictures outside, but they don’t allow you to take photos inside the temple.
To keep in mind, keep an eye on your watch as you have to climb down before the sunsets. Once you reach Sitakunda again, have some snacks, and head back home with the same route. The chilly wind and the mesmerising hilltop view will indeed be an unforgettable memory for you.
